Can a damaged ECU be repaired?

Often, yes - but it depends on what failed and how far the damage spread. Component level repair means finding the specific failed part and replacing it, rather than replacing the whole module.

Commonly repairable

• Failed output drivers, where the surrounding circuitry survived
• Power supply components
• Communication transceivers
• Connector pins and solder joint failures
• Early-stage corrosion that has not reached the board's inner layers

Harder, and sometimes not viable

• Burn damage that has destroyed tracks or the board substrate
• Long-term water ingress with corrosion under components
• Damage to the main processor or to memory holding unrecoverable data

How it is decided

Whether a specific unit is repairable is a judgement made after inspection, not from a photograph or a description over the phone. Where repair is not viable, the practical alternatives are a cloned or a programmed replacement module.
